Venus Flytrap Eyes
02:55
|
|
||
have you ever wondered
why nothing can stay?
I saw old Moses
walking away
what a sight to see
and what a thing to hear him cry
and when you're looking at me, baby,
with your venus flytrap eyes
I can't help but be delighted
just to be one of your flies
can't help but wonder
why anyone would ever get around
and we ain't in any war, babe,
'cause we've only got one side
and it's hard to charge at nothing, Lord,
and take it all in stride
day after day
so I think it might be time I was on my way
and when your broken barricades
start to crumble to the sea
and there's no one else to call on, baby,
no one else but me
you've got my number
don't lose it when the sun starts going down
and when that sun goes down
over top of the hill
and you tell yourself you're beautiful
like everybody will
I hope you listen
'cause even springtime fades out every year
and we ain't in any war, babe,
'cause we've only got one side
and it's hard to charge at nothing, Lord,
and take it all in stride
day after day
so I think it might be time I was on my way
so have you ever wondered
why nothing can stay?
like how a person's feeling, Lord,
on any given day
I'm no exception
but hindsight's always twice as clear

Special Kind of Blue
03:44
|
|
||
last night I fell asleep alone
with the television static on
I dreamed a face and heard a voice
that cut through all the fuzzy noise
and woke up with an aching pain
somewhere 'tween my heart and brain
somewhere all my wires got crossed
what can't be had cannot be lost
and as I threw the shutters wide
and drove the shadows home to hide
with the part of me that always really knew
the sky was like a special kind of blue
now days are dark and nights are long
and she turns up in every song
sometimes I don't mind anyway
a broken clock's right twice a day
and underneath the kitchen sink
between the rags and empty drinks
I can see a pale green light
slipping through the cracks at night
and I must say I've been okay
no right to not be anyway
the way I feel is anything but new
it's just another special kind of blue
a situation old as time
though surely none hurt worse than mine
though Townes, Catullus, Elmore James
must have nearly felt the same!
And no, a month's not very long,
but early signs all read so strong
I never really thought it through
the things that she already knew
and left up to my own device
I know that I will be alright
I'll find something better I can do
than sit here feeling special kinds of blue

Once I Was A Child
02:31
|
|
||
once I was a child it's true
ignorant in heart and mind
but the difference, dear, between me and you
is I have left that life behind
I hear the ticking of the clock
it echoes loud around my head
the footfalls that cannot be stopped
the truth that's better left unsaid
I sit alone within my room
this little cell I love so dear
and out my windows dogwoods bloom
I wish that they could draw you near
and now the hours go sailing by
slipping through these thin stone walls
like frightened birds they start and fly
and shan't return or hear my calls
so won't you light a candle dear
and won't you let it burn so low
that you can see me standing here
take a good long look and blow

Francis of Assisi
and Johnny Appleseed
they can give you in a moment
everything you'll ever need
give your salt back to the ocean
and your body to the earth
for all you've ever needed
it was given at your birth
the Buddha spoke in silence
the Apostles spoke in tongues
Jacob dreamed of ladders
but he never climbed a rung
the ashes rose to fire
and the dunes of dust remained
you can try to fool yourself
but you can never stay the same
well the stars are always burning
if it's day or if it's night
and though you may not live to see it
it'll all turn out alright
there's a universe beginning
and it's hiding in your hand
give to Caesar what is Caesar's
and your life back to the land
so forget what you have asked for
forget what you've been told
'cause no one will be left outside
to shiver in the cold
though the fire's catching faster
it's been burning all these years
keep your eyes on the horizon
for the morning's drawing near
